There are a few answers to this question, the best being: Why not? We have not found a mud engine that does exactly what we want, the more popular engines were written in a time when systems were not nearly as powerful as they are now, so being allowed a little more overhead will allow us to design something that is ultimately easier on the admins running the mud.
